08-31 Senior Mechanical Designer (Ottawa, ON) Purpose of position
To participate in the development of a variety of mechanical applications and/or components within March Networks Corporation.
Essential duties and Responsibilites
- Mechanical design and documentation using Pro Engineer software
- Leads projects and provides technical guidance/mentorship to less experienced staff Leadership is focused on the technical aspects of the job, rather than the people management aspects
- Execution, technical guidance and support for activities required during design implementations
- Development and execution of test plans which ensure designs meet or exceed specifications
- Supports vendors to fabricate initial mechanical prototypes
- Includes supervision and support of external vendors executing Engineering validations
- Participates in the review of supporting documentation (user manuals, online help, etc.)
- Participates in the research of new technology to provide product innovation or problem resolution
- Adhere to corporate technical standards and processes
- Interact with representatives from other Engineering disciplines for product development
- Will participate in product sustaining activities, including fault analysis and corrective actions, component obsolescence, and manufacturing support activities
- May be required to support installed product where field problems have been identified
- Consults with other corporate team members to clarify design considerations; i.e. to understand the test environment, process implications, technical compliance standards, etc
- May have occasional contact with customers when investigating field problems
- Other duties as required
Education / Qualifications / Requirements / Experience
- University Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 6-9 years relevant mechanical design experience
- Solid understanding of Pro Engineer and Pro Engineer Sheet metal software
- Sheet metal design
- Fabrication drawing creation
- An understanding of various mechanical fabrication methods
- Electronic enclosure design
- A solid understanding of the design process and the ability to function independently through that process
- EMC (faraday cage) design an asset
- Thermal design as it pertains to electronic enclosures an asset
- Vibration isolation design an asset
- Ingress protection design an asset
- Familiarity with cable management and design an asset
- Demonstrated openness to new ideas and approaches
- Excellent planning and time management skills
- Strong understanding and appreciation of a diverse work environment
- Ability to relate well to people and work in cooperation with others to effectively coordinate activities to accomplish tasks
Complexity
Works independently in most cases with some general direction provided by managers, team leaders, or other more experienced team members. Judgments are made within framework of standard practices and work protocols. Requires investigation of possible choices from various alternatives and knowledge of past precedent. Must be able to evaluate alternatives and determine the most effective solutions.
Responsibility
Works independently and as part of a team. Decisions are made within the framework of guidelines, subject to occasional functional guidance. Makes decisions on day-to-day work priorities and method of processes. Errors or inefficiencies will have measurable financial impact due to cost of rework or lost time.
