08-17 Market Research Manager (Ottawa, ON) Purpose of position
The Market Research Manager provides competitive and business research and analysis in support of the company's goals and objectives. This individual will support a range of internal clients, including Product Management, Sales, Business Development and Marketing. They will collect, analyse and distribute requested data based on an understanding of our own products and target Markets, our direct and indirect Customers, our product Competitors and our Channel and Strategic Partners. A close working relationship with Sales and Partners to solicit up-to-the-minute competitive information is required
Duties
- Sources, evaluates, validates and publishes analysis on competitive and business-related companies, products and markets, potentially including:
o Competitors - e.g., company, products assessment and comparison, feature strength and weakness analysis
o Vertical market trends - e.g., teaming with Business Development Managers on the analysis of key verticals (banking, retail, commercial/industrial)
o Key Customers data - e.g., growth activities, expansion plans, geographic coverage o Geographic Specific Data - e.g., US, Latin America, Canada, Europe market data
o Channels - assessments, coverage, market specialization
o Strategic Partners - technology portfolio, roadmaps, cooperative opportunities
- Designs and conducts additional analyses (proactive and upon request) and prepare supplemental reports to enhance the usability of the data
- Presents findings and summaries to internal audiences in written and presentation format
- Respond to ad hoc information requests; i.e. in support of immediate sales needs to win business, or industry opportunities to generate awareness
- Perform special projects and other related duties, as needed
- Monitors top competitors to ensure the company is kept informed of "what's new" on the product landscape
- Escalates any potential product/feature threats to the product management team in support of the sales efforts
- Establishes a two-way communication and feedback channel with Sales, Product Management and Partners in order to obtain up-to-the-minute data (company Extranet will be a major vehicle)
- Develop/maintain a 12-month competitive analysis roadmap with clear updating and publishing cycles
- On an as required basis, supports the delivery of March Networks company data to key analyst(s) with the goal to create awareness for March Networks and its products to ensure accurate representation in industry reports
- Sources 3rd-party research to validate our markets and future opportunities
Education / Qualifications
- University degree desired, preferably in business, marketing or related field
- Excellent research and analysis skills, combined with a strong technical aptitude and a developing appreciation for business and market drivers
- The ability to quickly understand our products and target markets in considerable detail
- Commitment to sourcing external product and market data as needed, and validating the details, is essential
- Well developed written and oral communication skills, with ability to make group presentations
- Ability to work successfully as part of the Marketing Team is a must
Experience
- 6-9 years of hands-on research and analysis experience
- Experience in the security industry a plus. Equivalent research/analysis experience in a similar technology field will be considered
- Strong PC skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Proficiency in Internet
- Demonstrated openness to new ideas and approaches
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks based on relative importance and urgency
- Strong understanding and appreciation of a diverse work environment
- Demonstrated skills and abilities in collaborative efforts with experience in team/project oriented activities
- Excellent human relations skills to effectively interact with and maintain positive working relationship with management, peers, and internal and external clients
Complexity
This position requires the individual to develop in short order a solid understanding of March Networks products and business goals, giving them the context needed to ensure the competitive and market intelligence they gather is detailed and accurate enough to support key planning decisions and company objectives. This means a good technical aptitude as well as a strong business sense will be required. The successful candidate must also be able to deal with varying short- and longer-term requests, be able to prioritize these accordingly, and be able to work on multiple projects in parallel as requested
Responsibility
Within the overall mandate of the Product Management team, this position is responsible for providing both tactical and strategic business and competitive analysis in support of the company's goals and objectives. The position is also responsible for ensuring together with other members of the team that Industry Analyst(s) are kept aware of key developments at March Networks
