The Challenge
Australia’s vast geography, sparse population and limited bandwidth posed a serious challenge for Woolworths, the country’s largest retailer. A 64 kb/link to many of its rural locations also had to accommodate back office data, “so, in reality, we wanted the video surveillance system to operate at a data transfer rate of 32 kb/s,” said Loss Prevention Manager Darin Crofts.

The Solution
The March Networks hybrid recorders acquired by Woolworths feature MPEG-4 video compression and Adaptive Compression technology, which eliminate redundant spatial and temporal information as well as extraneous data caused by electrical noise. To ensure that vital back office data isn’t affected, March Networks Visual Intelligence Software also allows users to cap the bandwidth used for video transmission.
