The Advantages of Smart Data Mining vs. Traditional Data Mining Solutions
Overview
Data mining is the process by which a user searches a storehouse of data in order to discover and extract information. With regard to the use of data mining in a retail business environment, this function usually takes place at the corporate office where transactional activity (most often sales) is reviewed by selected individuals.
Data mining in a variety of forms has been in existence since the first retail system databases were created. Years ago, it consisted of a user reviewing endless receipt tapes looking for irregularities or possible problem areas. As automation advanced, the manual process was replaced by time-consuming database searches that most often produced mountains of paper reports.
With the advent of more sophisticated point of sale (POS) systems, electronic journals, and data collection files, the concept of creating software to ease the burden of this review process was developed and a new era of data mining software was born.
