Introduction to Video Compression Like any data transmission over a digital network, digital video is encoded as binary 1's and 0's. It has a source and a destination, and it requires an end-user application to manage the data. Traditional data, like spreadsheets, is different from multimedia data, such as video and audio, in the quantity of information transmitted. Like most data, video can be transmitted as a single clip, however it can also be streamed with no apparent beginning or end. Being able to handle this data over local and wide area networks presents a new challenge to enterprise IT departments today. This paper introduces the various technologies and standards related to networked digital video.
