Technical Tips

Each day, our Customer Care team responds to a variety of questions from technicians working in the field with our DVR hardware and software products. These technical tips are designed to address some of those more commonly posed questions in a convenient, downloadable format.

Using Release 5 with Corporate Firewalls

Q. In a previous Tech Tip, you discussed communicating with Release 4 DVRs through firewalls. I successfully implemented your recommended configuration, and now I would like to do the same for the recorders that I am upgrading to Release 5. I have also deployed your Enterprise Service Manager (ESM), but I am not certain which ports to open to enable communication with the Release 5 ESM and its registered recorders. Can you explain how recorder access through firewalls differs for the two releases?

A. Actually, Release 5 is quite similar to the previous Release 4 when it comes to firewall communication and, best of all, the setup is much easier as there are fewer ports to deal with. Also, there is a new feature to allow you to remotely contact managed recorders within your network.
