08-08 Hardware Development Manager (Ottawa, ON)
Purpose of position
To oversee the hardware department and corresponding operations within March Networks Corporation for the transportation division. The hardware department is responsible for the definition, implementation and support of hardware products designed for the mobile market.
Duties
Fulfill all management duties relevant to the position, which include the following:
- Supervise a department of technical staff working on embedded hardware designs
- Schedule departmental work and meet project deadlines. This includes assigning work and providing technical guidance and support as required.
- Ensure the department workload is distributed for most effective results
- Carry out relevant administrative tasks, such as project planning and tracking, hiring, staff development and performance and compensation reviews
- Adhere to corporate standards and processes
- Provide advice/leadership required by team members to fulfill his/her job duties. Includes team building, career development and performance reviews.
- Participate in detailed and sensitive negotiations within external agencies as required.
- Other duties as required
Fulfill the technical management duties of the position, which include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Oversee the development of all required hardware components
- Provide technical leadership and guidance for the overall architecture of the solution
- Oversee subcontracting activities as required by establishing and maintaining relationships with external contractors
- Identify new technologies and their applications that could benefit the project
- Provide technical support, training and direction to product management and business development team
- Take a lead role in managing regulatory submissions
- Participate in, and contribute to, the development of international technical standards as required
Education / Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an Electrical Engineering program.
Experience
- 8 years of experience developing hardware and leading design teams
- Detailed knowledge of the hardware development process, toolsets and methodologies
- Experience gathering requirements, developing hardware architectures and design specifications, and delivering compliant solutions

- Approvals processes (EMC, Safety and Network, North America and Europe, WEEE / ROHS)
- Data communications systems design
- LAN/WAN system design
- CAE/CAD - design/simulation tools (Orcad, Mentor, Viewlogic, Aldec, Synplicity)
- Manufacturing processes (Through hole, SMT) including manufacturing support
- Demonstrated skills and abilities in collaborative efforts with experience in team/project-oriented activities
- Demonstrated openness to new ideas and approaches
- Excellent planning and time management skills
- Strong understanding and appreciation of a diverse work environment
- Ability to relate well to people and work in cooperation with others to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish tasks
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, Internet and presentation software

Complexity
The nature of the work is highly technical and deeply involved with personnel and organizational details. Requires a significant amount of situation analysis, problem solving, resourcefulness, and judgement. Challenges are of a complex and broad nature, involving a number of unknown variables. Frequently requires development of alternative approaches for issue resolution. Work goes beyond the scope of practice or precedent. Innovation, adaptation, and significant independent judgements may be required in the performance of activities. The impact of problem resolution may be both immediate and longer term.
Responsibility
Decisions are made within the context of general company policy and practices, on an independent basis, within a department or function. Work is performed under general direction and to established objectives with little functional guidance. Decisions may have a significant financial impact and are subject to management implementation. Has budget responsibilities and signing authority within a set limit. May represent the company in external technical committee work, and make commitments on technical matters on behalf of the company.
